After Covid-forced postponements the past two years, the Friends of The Daily Texan group is moving forward with plans for a highly-anticipated annual dinner on Friday, April 8 this year at The Texas Union building.

Online registration for the event will begin in early February, with sign up info going out via social media and other contact methods.

The event will begin at 6 p.m. on April 8 with a social hour in the Shirley Bird Perry Ballroom of The Texas Union building, followed by dinner and recognition of honorees.

As with previous dinners, the event will honor Texan staffers, and also recognize Hall of Fame honorees for 2020 and 2021.

“We’re already receiving requests for ticket info and reservation of tables,” said Friends president John Reetz.

“We recognize there is pent-up interest and demand and will structure the evening so there is plenty of time to visit and re-connect, and also to recognize Hall of Fame honorees and scholarship winners.”

The Hall of Fame dinner serves as the main fund-raiser for the Friends group, a non-profit alumni group formed 9 years ago to support The Daily Texan.

Despite cancellation of the last two dinners, the Friends group has continued its scholarship program for Texan staffers and also selection of 2020 and 2021 Daily Texan Hall of Fame honorees.

“We can’t say it too frequently: thank you to our donors who have continued their support during Covid so we can continue supporting The Texan and its staffers,” Reetz said.

Total amount to be awarded to 8 Texan staffers this fall was $9,000.
