The Daily Texan has a rich history in producing talented, award-winning photographers who have built outstanding careers after working at the student newspaper.
Nine of the 26 Pulitzer Prizes won by Texan staffers have been awarded in the category of Photography.
To support Texan photojournalists, the Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. is raising funds to provide a $10,000 grant to The Texan for purchase of needed photo and video equipment.
“Photo equipment is expensive, and supporting Texan photographers by providing current equipment to do their job is critical to their learning experience, and the quality of student journalism,” said a statement from Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc.

Texas Student Media Director Will Parchman and Stanley Farrar, a Friends board member who has had a stellar career in photography and digital transition, are working together to identify The Texan’s needs.
The Friends board has received its first donation to the photo fund, a substantial donation from former Texan staffer Janie Paleschic, in honor of her husband Marlon Taylor, a former Daily Texan and Texas Student Media photographer.
Marlon died July 2 of last year. He had a long and successful career as a photographer and studio manager.
He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin in 1973 with an interdisciplinary degree in photojournalism. He believed he was the first “photoj” grad at UT.
His life was defined by his love for outdoor adventures, his artistry through photography, and his great love for his family and his close friends, who were really like a second family.
Please read more about Marlon here.
All donations to the Photo Fund will be matched at 100 percent level by Friends of The Daily Texan.
Already, The Texan is making good use of the Friends “downpayment” on the grant, and photo editor Kennedy Weatherby shows off some of the new equipment in an adjacent photo.
