Now, more than ever, The Daily Texan needs your help.
When Covid-19 hit hard a year ago, The Daily Texan was prospering, excelling editorially, fully staffed. And Texas Student Media was headed for a strong year built around an aggressive budget.
A year later, The Texan perseveres, making sure the UT campus gets the coverage it deserves and needs. The adjustment has not been easy. To weather the pandemic, student journalist salaries have been cut at The Texan, and staff reductions have taken place at Texas Student Media.
The Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc., an 8-year-old non-profit founded to support The Texan and its student journalists, is the final stage of its most important ever fund-raising drive.
We are about $8,000 short of our goal but have hopes of last-minute donors coming forward. So far, 80 people have donated since the fund drive began last year.
Once the drive ends, we will announce the total raised.
How will the funds be used?
There are several ways: to fund scholarships for Texan journalists, to support editorial projects as needed, to purchase needed photo and video equipment and to support other needs as identified by Texan management.
The fund drive is necessary because the group’s main fund-raiser, the annual Hall of Fame Awards and Scholarship Dinner, was not held in 2020 due to the pandemic. And there is no certainty it will be held this fall.
Yet the Friends group is continuing to meet our mission: supporting student journalism on the University of Texas campus.
Did The Texan make a difference in your life? Do you support the next generation of journalists?
Please show your support, and assist The Texan and student journalists during a very challenging time.
