Supporters of student journalism at the University of Texas and fans and friends of The Daily Texan, please mark March 31 on your calendar.
That’s the date of the annual Friends of The Daily Texan gathering on the Austin campus, and this year it will be a bit different.
The gathering will be both an outdoor (weather permitting) and indooor reception in the Walter Cronkite Plaza located in the Moody College of Communication complex.
“This event marks the 10th anniversary of Friends of The Daily Texan,” board members said in a statement,. “We wanted to make it more of a celebration for all.”
There will be a longer reception period with several food and beverage stations, and the attendees will move to a comfortable auditorium – with desert stations – for Hall of Fame selections and the award of scholarships to staff members.
This year, 11 Daily Texan staffers will receive annual grants from the Friends of The Texan group and its partners. Since 2018, 25 Texan staffers have received annual scholarship grants. In 2023, the Friends group is running a major campaign to build its permanent endowment for scholarships for Texan staffers.
In addition, new member of The Daily Texan Hall of Fame will be introduced. Previous honorees include Walter Cronkite, Lady Bird Johnson, Willie Morris, Liz Smith, Liz Smith, Liz Carpenter and other distinguished Texan grads.
More information to come soon but mark your calendar.
Registration for the event will begin soon.
