A series of editorials outlining the failures of railroads and state officials to protect Houstonians from the dangers and inconveniences of stopped trains has won the Houston Chronicle’s Editorial Department its second Pulitzer Prize in four years.
The Pulitzer Prize for Editorial Writing follows months of work by the board to identify the problem stopped trains pose in the community and possible solutions aimed at keeping the trains moving or investment in finding ways for people to avoid them.
Members of the editorial board honored are former topinion editor, now a state columnist, Lisa Falkenberg, deputy opinion editor Raj Mankad, opinion photojournalist Sharon Steinman and senior editorial writer Leah Binkovitz. Falkenberg was a reporter at The Daily Texan.
Overall, it is the third win for the Chronicle. Falkenberg won the paper’s first Pulitzer in 2015 for commentary.
She recently returned to column writing full time as Hearst’s senior columnist for Texas, where her work will appear in the Hearst-owned Chronicle but also the San Antonio Express News, Austin American Statesman and other Hearst properties.
