Donors to The Texan

The Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc. is a 501 (3)(c) nonprofit organization.

The Friends group is all-volunteer. Funds received are provided directly to The Daily Texan and Texas Student Media to support needs of The Texan and staff. Funds are used for editorial projects, travel and coverage, education and training, photographic and video equipment and other needs.

In addition, 13 scholarships for Texan staffers are granted each year:

• a $2,500 grant from Friends of The Daily Texan, Inc.;
• a $2,500 photography grant award from Lynne Dobson and Gregg Wooldridge;
• a $2,500 sports journalism award from Kirk and Vicki Bohls;
•  a $2,500 award honoring A.R. “Dick” Elam, funded by the Elam family, David Powell , Karen Elliot House and other individuals donors;
• a grant of  $2,500 for political coverage, in honor of Rene and Jimmy Wisch by the Wisch Foundation (former Daily Texan Managing Editor Steve Wisch, and his sisters, Linda, Judy (BJ at UT  in Advertising, 1976), Susan (BS. at UT in 1980) and Sharon, the current Editor and Publisher of the Texas Jewish Post;
• a $2,500 award honoring S. Griffin Singer, funded by Jo Clifton, Joe Phillips and the Friends group
• a $1,500 scholarship grant from Becky and Jerry Conn, who met at The Texan and later married;t
• two $1,500 scholarships from John McConnico, Jean-Marc Bouju and the Friends group, McConnico and Bouju worked at The Texan and later traveled the globe as Pulitzer Prize-winning photographers for The Associated Press; the scholarships honor jounalism department instructors;
• a $1,000 grant for entertainment coverage, honoring Texan staffer Middy Randerson and funded by John Pope;
• a grant of $1,000 for news writing, funded by Bill Mintz;
• two awards of $1,000 each to the runners-up for the Friends award.

The annual grants are supported by the Friends of The Daily Texan Endowment Fund, plus annual donations to the Friends group.

The first grant of $1,500 was awarded to a staffer in 2018, and since then. total of 49 cash awards have been provided through 2025.
