Facing Covid-19 concerns and with remote work a reality, The Daily Texan management and staff have tackled the issue of continued publication with innovative and creative ways to spread news and information to the UT community this summer.
In addition, the Texan management and staff are planning ahead to the fall, holding weekly meetings with the fall planning committee.
Summer Managing Editor Sami Sparber explains:
“This summer, for the first time, the Texan is producing its weekly print product remotely. We’ve adapted to an online-only flipbook, which showcases our reporting, art and design in an innovative way while staying true to our traditional format.
“A new flipbook is published on the Texan homepage every Tuesday.
“Each week, in addition to tackling whatever breaking news comes our way, the leadership team meets over Zoom to coordinate the flipbook’s content, cover and page layout.
“In order to own storylines that are particularly relevant to the UT community, such as the University’s reopening in August, we started scheduling weekly meetings with the fall planning committee.
“Those meetings have already powered our reporting, leading to this scoop about masks being required in campus buildings. We’ve also created our first-ever multimedia department to house our audio and video staffers.
“To further our goals of producing accountability, impact and public service journalism, our reporters have been keeping a close eye on student demands for campus change — and how University and elected officials are responding.
“For the latest updates on what our summer staff is up to, be sure to follow our Twitter feed and our Instagram page.”
