From The Houston Chronicle
This weekend, the University of Texas officially enters the Southeastern Conference, a place where they like to say “it just means more.”
It means more to us as well.
That’s why we’re happy to announce the addition of Kirk Bohls to our coverage of the Longhorns and college sports.
That name might ring a bell with many Longhorns fans.
Bohls has been synonymous with UT coverage for quite some time — over 50 years as a reporter and columnist with the Austin American-Statesman.
With a nose for news and a conversational wit, Bohls is just as comfortable talking about Darrell Royal or Steve Sarkisian, Vince Young or Arch Manning, Abe Lemons or Rodney Terry, Cliff Gustafson or Jim Schlossnagle.
You might already have seen some of Bohls’ work for us this week — he couldn’t wait to get started and scooped our announcement — with his reporting on the UT-A&M baseball saga.
Combined with Brent Zwerneman’s reporting on Texas A&M in College Station and Joseph Duarte’s reporting on UH from Houston, the Chronicle has the teams from the state’s three largest colleges covered like no other outlet.
A NOTE FROM THE FRIENDS: The Houston Chronicle sports staff has a lot of The Daily Texan in its DNA. (Thanks to Griff Singer and Joe Phillips for this outstanding list.)
The Chronicle’s sports editor is Reid Laymance, a former Texan sports editor. As reported earlier, Duarte has been a Chronicle sportswriter for decades. Other former Texan stars preceding him include former sports editor Danny Cunningham, prize winning writer David Barron (he also was an editor for Dave Campbell’s Texas Football), Neal Farmer, Melanie Hauser and Alan Truex. Randy Harvey finished his illustrious career in sports writing at The Chronicle, first as a columnist and then as sports editor. He previously had filled the same roles at The Baltimore Sun and LA Times. Randy was a top member of The DT sports crew in the early 70s that included Texas sports-writing legends Buck Harvey and Alan Truex, as well as Hartley Hampton, who became a nationally-renowned trial lawyer, and is also a member of The Daily Texan Hall of Fame.
