The Friends of The Daily Texan Board of Directors has voted to fund an additional scholarship for a Texan staffer, bringing the total to 5 annual grants provided by the Friends plus three generous grants from former Texan staffers.
Those three additional grants include one from Becky and Jerry Conn, and two from John McConnico and Jean-Marc Bouju.
The additional $1,000 annual Friends scholarship will go to a staff member who has shown an interest in sports coverage.
In addition, two $500 runner-up awards to the Friends of The Daily Texan Award have been increased from $500 each to $1,000 each, due to the generosity of an anonymous donor.
Currently staff scholarship grants totaling $9,000 a year are provided to Texan staff members.
Scholarship grants include:
- $1,500 Becky and Jerry Conn Award
- $1,000 McConnico-Bouju Multi-Media Award
- $1,000 McConnico-Bouju Print Award
- $1,500 Friends of The Daily Texan Award
- $1,000 Friends of the Daily Texan Sports Award
- $1,000 Friends of the Daily Texan Arts/Entertainment/Features Award
- $1,000 Friends of The Daily Texan Award
- $1,000 Friends of The Daily Texan Award
One grant is funded by Jerry and Becky Conn, who met at The Daily Texan and later married.
Two additional grants are provided by Associated Press Pulitzer Prize winning photographers John McConnico and Jean-Marc Bouju, who met at The Texan and traveled the world covering wars and other news for the AP.
And five scholarships are funded by the Friends group.
Other Friends group support includes editorial and special project needs, purchase of photo and video equipment, assistance in bringing the Texan archives online, donations to Horn Raiser and other funds supporting The Texan and other items as they arise.
